At GDC we had the chance to go hands-on with the upcoming Xbox app for Windows 10. As you can see, it eschews the maddening blocky minimalism of Windows 8 for a wordier but more mouse-friendly layout. It’s designed to make it easy for you to sort your Xbox Live affairs without wrestling with a virtual keyboard.
Why should I care?
But admin in itself isn’t sexy that’s why no-one dresses as a data entry clerk on Halloween. What is sexy is the ability to stream Xbox One Apps directly to a Windows 10 PC or tablet. The app also includes a basic but powerful DVR tool that can be used to trim video clips of PC games including Steam titles.
What happens next?
Windows 10 is currently in the public beta testing stage and is slated for release later this year. By that time, the app’s DVR capabilities will be expanded to allow you to import game clips, so you can tidy ’em before uploading. A wireless adapter that’ll let you use Xbox One controllers on PC or tablet is also incoming.
Tab clear
This nice, simple sidebar serves as a one-click gateway to everything you can do on your Xbox Dashboard and a little bit more besides. The Game clips tab makes it easy to trim excess fat from your recorded clips, so they get straight into the action. You can record and edit footage from any Pc game think of it as the video equivalent to the ‘print screen’ function.
Achievements Unlocked
Here’s a thing. let’s say Fable legends has an achievement for, say, killing 1,000 orcs. Then let’s say you stab 568 orcs on the Pc version before giving up. if you were to begin again on Xbox one much later, your first orc kill would be registered as your 569th, rather than you having to start from scratch. one version of the game, one unified achievement list.
Buzz Feed
This is your main feed, where you can view and comment on your friends’ shared clips, screenshots, achievements and statuses. Got nothing interesting to say? just politely acknowledge their graft by clicking on the heart icon the equivalent of a ‘like’ on Facebook… or a real-life shrug of mild indifference.
Search & enjoy
In this cheeky little box you can type a game name say, #iDarb and it’ll bring up a list of friends who are either playing said game or have recently played it, so you know who to badger if you’re hunting for a multiplayer match. The search results will also bring up popular broadcasters of that game.
