Machiavillain: Make your house a tomb

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys withholding your number just to slur “What’s your favourite scary movie?” down the phone at strangers, then have we found the game for you. Previously a programmer for Ubisoft, Wild Factor founder Alexandre Lautie entered a Game Jam after seeing The Cabin In The Woods. What he came up with was a house management title where you look after monsters and murder unsuspecting visitors.

Inspired by Dungeon Keeper and Prison Architect, Lautie and his team decided to make a full game and now have a veritable menagerie of famous monsters such as werewolves, vampires and zombies ready for you to look after and pit against humans. “Your monsters need feeding, a place to sleep, and comfort,” says Lautie. “Some will be happy with a straw bed in a dormitory, others have higher standards if you want to keep them happy. That was one of the funniest things to figure out: what do horror movie villains do when no-one is waiting around to be slaughtered? Besides cleaning the blood stains, of course.”

Scream Too
When humans do come a-calling, you must follow horror movie rules in order to pick them off successfully. “They’re the cornerstone of the game,” explains Lautie. “They’re part of the fun and an occasional pain! All of them matter, but ‘killing them one by one’ (unless they’re having sex, of course) is the one rule that requires the most strategic thinking.”

With a manor to build and resources to find, there’s no shortage of tasks to do in a real haunted house. Plus there’s endless hungry mouths to feed especially the undead. “Zombies, like all monsters, need to feed regularly so you will have to find a way to preserve leftover brains and properly cooked dishes,” warns Lautie. “Plus, some villains may like their meat with some fava beans and a nice chianti for instance.” All we can say is fuh fuh fuh fuh fuh…
